At a BBQ last week the conversation got around to discussing Mel Gibson’s latest movie “Heartbreak Ridge”: It generated a lot of comment about other war movies and the inevitable best choice from both the men and women.
Mine is “All Quiet on the Western Front” The 1930 film is the best version although the 1979 film with Ernest Borgnine is also good.
The story line is of a young soldier who, along with his graduating high school classmates, enlist in the German Imperial Army during the First World War and faces profound disillusionment in the soul-destroying horror of World War I.
The end of my film choice rivals the stunning conclusion to “Gallipoli”

Sam Peckinpah’s Cross of Iron is certainly up there for me, another rare film depicting the German experience on the Eastern Front during WWII in the Crimea, albeit in English. Great performances from James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason and David Warner.
The Odd Angry Shot. I wasn’t SAS but it relates to my own experiences in Vietnam more than any other film. The title says it all!
It was ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, not sure WTF you were watching ………..
Sands of Iwo Jima is one of the best. D Day (Longest Day) is also good.
I used to stir up poms by saying that the Crying Game was the greatest British war film since Zulu. Always good for tense moments in the Mess – theirs or ours.
